Champi, the weekly head massage, is one of the oldest habits in Indian homes. It asks for very little: a bottle of oil, warm hands and a few unhurried minutes.
Why oiling is a habit, not a treatment
In Ayurvedic routine, abhyanga — self-massage with oil — is something you return to, not something you do once. The value is in the rhythm: a set evening each week, the same few minutes, done without rushing. Hair care in this tradition is measured in months, not days.
A simple routine
- Warm the oil. Take a generous amount into your palms and rub them together until the oil feels pleasantly warm. Warm oil spreads further and feels better on the scalp than cold oil straight from the bottle.
- Work along the parting. Part your hair in sections and apply the oil to the scalp first, then down the length. Sectioning matters: most people oil the lengths and miss the scalp entirely.
- Massage gently. Use your fingertips, not your nails, in slow circles for five to ten minutes. Nails scratch; fingertips do the work.
- Let it sit. Leave the oil on for at least an hour. Many people prefer to leave it overnight and wash it out in the morning.
- Wash it out. Rinse with lukewarm water and a mild shampoo. Very hot water is best avoided, and a sulphate-free wash is gentler if you oil often.
How often, and how much
Once or twice a week suits most routines. Fine hair needs less oil than thick hair — start with a small amount, and add more only if the ends still feel dry. If your hair feels heavy the next day, you either used too much or washed it out too quickly.
Choosing an oil
Global Ayurveda makes several oils in the Ramy's range, each built around a different traditional ingredient: Bhringraj with hibiscus, amla with farm-fresh aloe vera, cold-pressed coconut, and the cooling Cool Red oil. Pick the one whose ingredients suit your routine, and give it a few weeks of regular use before judging it.
A few things worth avoiding
- Tying hair tightly while it is still oiled and wet.
- Washing with very hot water, which leaves the scalp feeling stripped.
- Switching oils every week — consistency tells you more than variety.
Ayurveda treats hair care as a habit rather than a quick fix. A steady weekly massage, a gentle wash and a little patience go a long way.
